Pennsylvania’s Richest and Poorest Places

On July 1, 2015, we updated the demographic data in the Pennsylvania HomeTownLocator Gazetteer with new estimates for 1,764 Pennsylvania places including 1,015 incorporated places (954 boroughs, 57 cities, 3 municipalities and 1 town) and 749 census designated places (CDPs). See Gazetteer References & Data Sources for methodology.

There is population, housing and income data for the current year and forecasted growth rates for the next five years. Using a simple online data comparison tool, we’ve identified Pennsylvania’s richest and poorest places using the July 1, 2015 estimates of Average Household Income.

The Borough of Fox Chapel in Allegheny County has the highest Average Household Income in Pennsylvania with an average estimated to be $247,926. The Borough of Fox Chapel has a total population of 5,365 and 2,087 households. Average household size is 2.57 people. The vast majority of housing is Owner Occupied (79.2%) with just 5.1% of the housing units identified as vacant. Average Home Value in the Borough of Fox Chapel is $822,042.

The Borough of Wheatland in Mercer County has the lowest Average Household Income in Pennsylvania with the average estimated to be $28,531. The Borough of Wheatland has a population of 620 with 312 households. Average household size is 1.99. Owners occupy 54.2% of the housing units; renters occupy 31.2% while 14.5% of the housing units are vacant. Average Home Value in the Borough of Wheatland is $63,384.
